Christians -- well, Catholics. That's a subset of Christianity. Think of one really big religion that keeps getting pushed around on everyone.

It's the 19th century for us, so... since the 8th century? A lot of Scandinavian kings converted by then, and then in the 12th century, they established Archdioceses -- people who answered directly to the church. So you've got smaller seats of power in the area, which lends more influence to priests and missionaries.
