Solar panels are a great idea, until you're stuck with overcast weather for days on end. I could never have the patience for them. You get extra points for that!
It works for what we had to do. I've heard of coal and gas-powered vehicles, but they're not practical when you're going to be outside of the safe zones for months on end.
