Sort of? They kind of just...exist. Until something moves near them, then they try to eat it.

What's crazy is that they never seem to rot away. As long as something else doesn't kill them, they can go on living like that for years and years.

Yes, this makes sense. It is difficult for flesh to generate the thanergy necessary to avoid decay, which is the reason most such entities develop the taste for flesh. Even a small amount of the flesh and blood of a living creature can sustain them long enough to hold off decay for some time.
